Purpose of Discipline Plan

Our school-wide discipline plan follows a Multi-tiered System of Support that focuses on tier 1 (all students) universal expectations. We teach these expectations, provide feedback, and enforce in all common areas of our building. Second Step is a skill-based social emotional curriculum that teaches students healthy social-emotional habits. Our student support department offers tier 2 services (small groups) for students that need similar skill practice on a variety of behavioral topics. Tier 3 (individual) services are offered for students that need the most intensive layer of support to teach lagging skills. We have a licensed, school-based therapist that offers therapy services to students in need throughout the school year. Schools that implement this tiered service model can expect a decrease in the number of office discipline referrals, a decrease in suspensions, an increase in academic achievement, and more time for teachers to teach, students to learn, and administrators to run their schools efficiently and effectively.

Classroom Expectations

At our school, we use Love and Logic to create a positive learning environment where students feel respected, responsible, and ready to learn.

What does this mean?
Love and Logic is a philosophy that balances care and empathy (“love”) with teaching responsibility through choices and consequences (“logic”). Instead of focusing on punishment, it helps children learn to make better choices and take ownership of their actions.

How It Looks in the Classroom

Respectful communication: Teachers respond to misbehavior calmly and with empathy, rather than anger.
Choices within limits: Students are given age-appropriate choices, which reduces power struggles and helps them practice decision-making.
Logical consequences: When mistakes happen, students experience consequences that are connected to their choices, not unrelated punishments.
Problem-solving skills: Teachers guide students to think through solutions instead of fixing everything for them.

In-School Suspension

In-School Suspension Procedures

The in-school suspension program has been organized to provide a controlled environment for students who have continued difficulty in adjusting to expectations and limits in normal school settings. The following procedures will be followed in operation of the program:

Assignment to the ISS program will be made by the principal or assistant principal who will notify the parents of the student’s ISS status and send a discipline letter home.
Any student assigned to ISS who refuses to cooperate with all the rules and limits of the program will be suspended out-of-school.
In-school suspension will be held in a controlled and restricted atmosphere.
Notification of suspension will be provided to all teachers. Teachers will give assignments to be completed to the ISS monitor by 9:00 AM on the day of the assignment. Assignments will consist of daily classwork, including tests. Students will receive credit for all work completed.
A quiet RESTRICTED atmosphere will be maintained at all times in the ISS room. No talking or movement will be allowed. Students must bring paper and pencils to the ISS room.
Students assigned to in-school suspension will first report to their homerooms. Students will report to the ISS room after the tardy bell, no later than 8:45 AM.
Students assigned to ISS will be assigned a specific desk. The student may not, for any reason, leave the assigned desk without permission from the ISS monitor.
Students will not be allowed to talk or communicate with any peers. This also applies during LUNCH, BATHROOM BREAKS, and IN THE HALLWAYS.
Students assigned to ISS will not chew gum, eat, or drink anything in the ISS room.
Students assigned to ISS will not be allowed to sleep or lay their heads down on their desks.
Students assigned to ISS WILL complete all assigned work.
Students absent on assigned ISS day will be required to make up time immediately upon returning to school.
At the end of the day, students will be dismissed from the ISS room.
Students assigned to ISS will address the ISS monitor and all other staff respectfully at all times.
